days off

Love this widget. It is set to restart weekly so I can see how long it is until I can cook real food for the people I love.

Also. My favorite app since upgrading to Leopard is Dateline.

DateLine-icon64

DateLine is a small, simple app which displays a linear calendar on your desktop in a transparent window. It provides easy access to iCal by double clicking on a day. The background and text colors are customizable with support for transparency.

Why do more apps not support transparency? One of my all time favorite apps Newsfire is the only application I have that dims/becomes transparent when not active. And its almost a must have. This iMac screen is so bright it significantly reduces glare when it is running in the background.

For the very very very useful and why didn’t I think of that file.

Here’s something I know affects plenty of users out there. Have you ever pasted text in a document or email message, only to have it formatted differently than all the text around it? Irritating, right?

There’s an answer, thanks to the Keyboard & Mouse pane in System Preferences. If you click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab, you can assign “Paste Without Formatting” and/or “Paste and Match Style” to Command + V for all applications. Just click the plus button under the list, type in the name of the appropriate menu items, and press Command + V in the Keyboard Shortcut box.

Also here is one I learnt a long time ago which may be of some use.

There is little doubt that the CAPS LOCK KEY SERVES NO PURPOSE EXCEPT FOR NOOBEES IN CHAT AND EMAILS. IF YOU CAN’T HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY FOR THE LENGTH OF WHAT EVER IT IS YOU ARE YELLING ONLINE THEN I SUGGEST THAT NO ONE WILL CARE ANYWAY!
If like me you were sick of accidentally activating it there is an answer.
capslock
System preferences> keyboard & mouse> modifier keys> assign no action to Caps Lock key> OK
Done.

tech rant

kabel

So I am about to go on a three week holiday. Yay!

End of story. But…

I managed to pack all the clothes I will need in a space a church mouse would still think was a Penthouse.

Commence rant.

I am under no illusions that at present I will never be able to fit all the data I own in one convenient storage device. Photos, music etc…

So,

  1. I have hacked my gen1 psp to take a few movies with me. Should be good on the plane. And a couple of party albums that will make me famous at, well parties if I can plug in the psp. 3.5 audio jack permitting. Battery? 3 weeks?Better take the charger incase. And the USB cable.
  2. I have my digital SLR. With back up battery. And their life is great but better take the charger incase. Oh and the USB reader which is different to the psp so I can get images off it.
  3. iPod. Was going to take it but hope I don’t have time to listen to my music. If I did, still yet another cable. Which I would have to plug into my laptop to charge. But that is useless because I would need my external drives. Each with firewire 800 and their own power supplies. And yet more cables to keep the digital hub that is my laptop alive. Flag the iPod (bugger).
  4. Phone. Has blue tooth. YES! Thats worth a fist pump. Needs another charger. Boo!!

DRM is bad for the consumer but so is all this cable.

User pays. I would gladly add what… another $100 to all my products for standardization and backwards compatibility just to carry 1 charger that doubles as a data transfer cable for all my toys.

Anyway. Merry Christmas!

Homeward bound. YeeeeeHaaaaa!
